PRESS STATEMENT BY THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF POLYTECHNIC STUDENTS (NAPS) ON FRSC DIRECTIVES TO IMPOYUND STUDENT VEHICLES.

 February 5th, 2025

The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), in unwavering solidarity with our sister body, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), condemns in the strongest terms the directive issued by the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, instructing officers to impound vehicles belonging to NANS structures nationwide.

This directive is not only reckless and provocative but also an outright declaration of war on Nigerian students. We consider this an insult to the collective integrity of the student movement, and we will not stand idly by while our rights are trampled upon. Mobility is a fundamental necessity for our advocacy and representation, and any attempt to cripple our movement is a direct assault on the students of this nation.

While we recognize the FRSC’s mandate to ensure road safety, we categorically reject any attempt to single out student organizations for intimidation. If the FRSC thinks it can flex its authority against Nigerian students without consequences, it is making a grave mistake. We will not hesitate to respond in full force if any student vehicle is impounded unjustly.

Our Demands Are Clear:

1. The immediate reversal of this directive, as it is an unjustifiable attack on students.

2. An official engagement with NANS, NAPS, and other student structures to address concerns through dialogue, not oppression.

3. An end to all forms of harassment and undue victimization of student leaders and their structures.

Let it be known that Nigerian students are not pushovers. Should the FRSC proceed with this misguided action, we will have no choice but to mobilize nationwide for a massive shutdown of FRSC offices across the country. We will ensure that the Corps feels the full weight of our resistance.

We are not anarchists, but we will not accept oppression. We urge the Corps Marshal to act wisely and call his officers to order before this situation escalates beyond control. Respect begets respect.

Signed:

Comrade Oyewumi Joy Festus

President, National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS)
